In this millennium, how much money have the Amsterdam giants spent on new players?
Ajax is well known for a variety of things.
There is also their outstanding academy, which recently turned out players like Matthijs de Ligt, Ryan Gravenberch, and Jurrien Timber, to name a few.
Then there’s their steadfast commitment to playing fluid, attacking football, which has brought them great success both at home and abroad.
They are also well known for being a selling club, a team that is the ideal springboard for one of the current heavyweights in Europe. The most recent examples of that are Lisandro Martinez and Antony of Manchester United.
They are also not stingy with their spending, which may come as a surprise.
In the summer of 2022 alone they spent over €100 million to strengthen their squad.
But which players have cost them the most in recent seasons and who are their most-expensive signings ever?
The following are Ajax’s top 3 most expensive player signings!
Sebastien Haller | €22.50m
Prior to his highly publicised transfer from West Ham to Ajax during the January transfer window of the 2020–21 season, Haller was at the height of his abilities.
Haller had only recently been acquired by West Ham for €50 million, but they parted ways with him at less than half that sum when Ajax acquired him for just €22.50 million after a disappointing tenure in London.
Haller had a fantastic 2021–22 season and finished with 47 goals in 66 appearances for the Dutch team after reuniting with Erik ten Hag at Ajax.
Haller left Ajax in the summer of 2022 to sign a €31 million contract with Borussia Dortmund.
Calvin Bassey | €23m
Bassey moved to Ajax in the summer of 2022 after spending two seasons at Rangers, where he assisted them in reaching the Europa League final in his second season.
The €23 million defender made his debut for Ajax as a substitute in the 5-3 loss to PSV in the race for the Johan Cruyff Schaal, but he had a bit of a nightmare start to life in the Netherlands after getting a direct red card after just 15 minutes.
Steven Bergwijn | €31.25m
After several successful seasons at PSV, Bergwijn moved to Tottenham Hotspur in 2020 for a fee of €30 million.
In a 2-0 victory for Spurs against Manchester City in the Premier League, he netted his first goal for the team.
However, he was unable to really build on that promising start, and eventually, Ajax came calling in the summer of 2022, making him the most expensive transfer in Eredivisie history by paying €31.25 million to sign him.
