The Ajax full-back has been linked with the Bundesliga giants, but he played down those links while Describing a recent trip.
Sergino Dest has clarified his recent trip to the Allianz Arena amid rumors that the U.S. men’s national team defender could head to Bayern Munich.
Dest was envisioned in the audience during Bayern’s eventual 4-3 triumph over Hoffenheim in February since the German giants closed advancement from the DFB-Pokal.
The look fueled rumors linking the full-back into the Bundesliga side, with reports from the Netherlands in February saying that Bayern had tried to purchase the defender from Ajax last summer.
The movement came to fruition, but Dest’s look only added fuel to the fire when it comes to further connections between the club and player.
However, he says that you shouldn’t read too much into it since the trip to Munich was more personal than professional as he just wanted a closer look at the club.
“I thought if Bayern is going to become interested, I wish to learn a little about how the club works. So I thought it’d be wonderful to test it out.
“But it was not that I was encouraged by Bayern, as indicated.
Dest has taken a significant leap with Ajax this year, having completely joined the club’s senior team this season.
The 19-year-old has made 20 Eredivisie appearances for the club this year, while also making eight appearances in Europe in both the Champions League and Europa League.
The league, like virtually every other league, is now suspended as a result of coronavirus outbreak with matches postponed until April 6 and probably beyond.
Dest’s success together with the Dutch team fuelled talk regarding his global future, together with the Netherlands pushing to make the teenage defender last fall.
However, the full-back ended that talk in October, committing his future to the U.S. prior to being cap-tied from the Nations League.
In total, Dest has made three appearances for the USMNT while also being named U.S. Soccer Young Male Athlete of the Year in 2019.
