Quincy Promes 2018/19 - scout report

Quincy Promes was already a Netherlands international before he came Ajax. This was a player who was tipped to make it big in a powerhouse club during his time at Spartak Moscow. But since those days, things haven’t exactly gone to plan for the 28-year-old winger. This led him to a move back home to the Netherlands.

A move to Sevilla had come to fruition for Promes in the summer of 2018. He became a record sale in Spartak Moscow history, as the Andalusian side roped him in for a fee of €20 million. The move represented a step-up for the winger, as he would compete in the upper reaches of the Spanish football.

At Spartak, Promes got some impressive numbers. He played 133 times in all competitions for the club. He got 66 goals and racked up a tally of 33 assists as well.

He got praise in 2017 from Dutch legend Edgar Davids. The former Tottenham and Barcelona man said: “He’s a good, talented player. I hope he has a bright future in Orange because the current team desperately needs talented players,”

In the La Liga, he made 33 appearances for Sevilla and got two goals and four assists for the club. In all competitions, he played 49 times and had a hand in 12 goals only. It wasn’t exactly a sparkling season for the Dutchman, as the club confirmed a Europa League spot on the table.

But the tides at the club were turning in the summer of 2019. Former Real Madrid boss Julen Lopetegui took over the club and former sporting director Monchi came in, following an underwhelming spell at Roma. A series of changes came in at the club, with 16 summer signings made. And in order to fund for those signings, many had to go out.

And Sevilla got rid of four of their most valuable players. Wissam Ben Yedder, Luis Muriel, Pablo Sarabia and Promes left the club. A move to Ajax came about for Promes, as he came back to a club that had played a key role in his development.

And the move back home has been resurgent for Promes. Under Erik ten Hag this season, Promes has made 16 appearances in all competitions for Ajax. He has been crucial to the club’s campaign, scoring ten times and racking up four assists as well. His form is one of the reasons the best casino site in Norway is backing Ajax to win the title again this season.

He has shown his versatility across the front three and in midfield. He has played on the left seven times so far, also playing five times in attacking midfield. He has played on the right flank on two occasions too. That tells a lot about the 28-year-old, who isn’t getting any younger with age.

In the UEFA Champions League, Promes’ quality shone through. While Ajax couldn’t make it to the next round, he never let anyone down. He got four goals, playing 1.2 key passes per game and completing just as many dribbles per game too. His directness allowed him to take 2.8 shots per game too.

While age might not be on his side currently, Promes is very much a crucial part of the Oranje side under Ronald Koeman. He has made 40 appearances in all competitions, scoring seven times since making a debut in 2014. He was part of the transition from the era that involved the likes of Robin van Persie, Wesley Sneijder, Arjen Robben and Rafael van der Vaart.

But Promes is still a regular on the left for the Oranje. In fact, he recently played at right-back under Koeman- a sign of how versatile he can be on his day. Playing in that game against Estonia, he got an assist in a 5-0 win.

With the Euros fast approaching, players like Promes will be key for the Netherlands. His versatility and experience will be vital in taking them closer to a potential title challenge.
